After a short illness, Phil passed away peacefully aged 57 on February 4, 2026 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa.
Born Philip George Genaille to Charlotte Genaille on December 29, 1968 in Birch River, Manitoba, and baptized Permie Philip Genaille, Phillip was later adopted by the Humphrey family in Winnipeg. The family then moved throughout Canada and then to the United States. Phil spent most of his teenaged years with the Larsen family in Fort Wayne, Indiana where he graduated from high school in 1988. Soon after, Phil rejoined the Humphreys in Ottawa, later setting out on his own and being employed by the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, for over 25 years. Phil was a gentle soul with a unique sense of humour. In his youth he was active in Scouting and art. He was an avid reader of books on nature, folklore, and geopolitical intrigue. For many summers he enjoyed visiting his relatives in Fort Wayne, Indiana; in Thunder Bay, Ontario; and in Pelican Rapids, Manitoba where he learned more about his Métis-Cree heritage. Phil is predeceased by his birth mother Charlotte Genaille, his grandparents Albert S. and Violet Humphrey, Carl and Hillja Rydholm, and George and Emma Genaille; and aunts Marlene Soychak (late John) and Carol Humphrey. He is survived by his mother Louise Larsen (late John) in Fort Wayne IN; father Jim Humphrey (Mary) and brother Michael Humphrey (Marie-Aline) in Ottawa; foster sister Sandra Pronteau in Vancouver BC; Auntie Linda Rydholm (Dave, late Lawrie) in Thunder Bay ON; Auntie Mary Campeau (Albert), uncles Daniel Genaille and Percy (Shirley) Genaille in Pelican Rapids MB; step-siblings Dale, Dean, Penny, John, Bill, David, late Scott, and Kim; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins in Ontario, Manitoba, Indiana, Illinois, and California.
Arrangements by Ottawa Cremation Service, and Paull Funeral Home in Swan River MB. Interment in Pelican Rapids, Manitoba at a later date.
